Among the many insights he gave me over the years was one he got from Ayn Rand, his favorite author and philosopher. It was the simple phrase, “check your premises.”

In other words, examine and confront your biases...don’t fall in love with your analyses...don’t be blinded by your conclusions...and always double check to make sure the situation hasn’t changed.

It’s invaluable advice not just for investing, but for life in general.
I was reminded of this counsel from Jim as I watched my friend Brent Johnson deliver his speech at last year’s New Orleans Investment Conference.
Unlike every other speaker at the event, Brent didn’t deliver any market forecasts or offer up specific investment ideas...

...And yet I thought it was one of the most important presentations I’ve seen in many, many years.
