The Fed just told us that “this time is different” and — unlike their last attempt — they’ll be able to raise rates without crashing the markets.

Sounds like a rude awakening lies ahead.

Dear Fellow Investor,

In the history of famous last words, the two phrases that might rank above all others are “Watch this...” (sometimes accompanied by “hold my beer”) and “this time is different.”

The latter phrase is most infamous for its usage in the investment arena, where punters untainted by experience have typically employed it to explain why they are ignoring history.

I’m certainly not one to argue that anything is impossible, especially in this wondrous day and age. But I find the position of Jerome Powell and his Federal Open Market Committee members — that they’ll be able to raise rates enough to kill off inflation without toppling the financial-asset house of cards they’ve built — to be about as close to impossible as one could imagine.

This is essentially the position that you get to once you distill the thousands of words in yesterday’s Fed policy statement and Powell’s press conference to one simple message.

The Fed clearly believes that today’s economic environment, with a buoyant economy rebounding from the Covid slowdown, an abundance of job openings and high inflation, stands in stark contrast to their last attempt to raise rates in 2016.

Back then, a slow-growth economy and low inflation meant there was little leeway to restrain economic growth and little reason to fight inflation.

This time, they say, it’s different.

I have to say that I agree with Chairman Powell. This time is different...because the current situation is actually much worse than before.

Yes, inflation is rampant and the need for higher rates is therefore more urgent. But the ability to act is much more restrained today.

In fact, it’s now essentially impossible for them to fight inflation and tighten policy to any significant degree.
