More Metals Mayhem

The metals and miners take another dive as the Iran war heats up again and a red-hot inflation number comes in.

“The beatings will continue until morale improves!” appears to be the motto for gold right now.

Every move lower lately has been followed by an attempt for a rebound...and then another dive downward.
 

The latest came today, as the downing of a U.S. Apache helicopter by an Iranian drone brought quick retaliation and a promise for much more from President Trump.

Of course, a CPI number showing inflation running at a hot 4.2% annual rate certainly didn’t help things.

Granted, the CPI came in as expected, but that alone tells you where expectations are right now. And in today’s bizzaro world, evidence of high inflation leads to hawkish Fed policy which leads to “sell everything” sentiment amongst traders.
 

Thus, gold has continued its plunge below the 200-day moving average...silver has dropped below its own 200 DMA...and the Gold Miners Bullish Percent Index has reached absolute zero — a level most recently matched by the absolute bottom in gold in December 2015.

Anyone who picks the absolute bottom of a market is simply lucky, so it’s a fool’s errand to say this is as low as we go. In fact, the odds favor further declines in the near term.
 

But this is definitely a bottoming process.
