Our discovery of a long-lost Milton Friedman video shows how far we haven’t come in the struggle for personal liberty.
| | |
Of the many items on my “to do” list, one task has been sitting there unmolested for years.
|
It’s the job of going through our massive archives of nearly five decades of New Orleans Conference presentations to pull out notable highlights to make available in the public domain.
Now, it isn’t like we haven’t tried to attack this mass of media before. But even some of our previous attempts have been lost to the passage of time.
I’m pleased to report that we’ve actually started to make a dent in it over the past couple of months, thanks to the efforts of our summer intern, Bobby. In fact, he discovered some videos of New Orleans Conference highlights that we’d produced years ago.
When Bobby sent me links to these videos, I immediately clicked on the one labeled “Milton Friedman Highlight.”

It was great to hear Milton’s booming voice and to see his powerful intellect on display once again.
…But his message was depressing.
| |
You see, in this short clip from a presentation at the 1998 New Orleans Investment Conference (a conference he attended along with his good friend Margaret Thatcher), Friedman happily proclaims that…
|
“In terms of rhetoric, we have won the battle (for free markets). That was sealed with the fall of the Berlin Wall.”
|
Milton goes on to note that there was still much to do in terms of “practice” on free markets, but his message was, on balance, optimistic in regard to the future for personal liberty. He notes that “the change in the rhetoric will, I believe, change practice” and, if we could continue to change public opinion, force a “decline in the size of government.”
|
I shudder to think what he would say if he could see what was happening today…to witness how socialism has recaptured the fancy of so much of the electorate, and in particular our youth.
|
There are some rays of hope, however. Coincidentally, an opinion piece in the Washington Examiner today reports on the rise of the “Liberty Republican” movement, essentially a libertarian wing of the Republican party that grew out of Congressman Ron Paul’s presidential campaign nine years ago.
As the Examiner notes, “Since then, Paul’s supporters have won hundreds of elections in state legislatures across the country, reshaping the debate on issues ranging from gun rights to school choice. Young Americans for Liberty (formerly “Students for Ron Paul”) counts 178 state legislators in 37 states as members.”
So the fight for free minds and free markets continues. As we see some battles lost, we can gain hope that others are being won.
For our part, we’ll continue to feature today’s most charismatic and eloquent advocates for personal liberty in our conferences, and try to get as much of our voluminous archive of free-market arguments into the public domain.

P.S. On the subject of Dr. Ron Paul, the veritable foundation of today’s liberty movement, I’d be negligent if I didn’t remind you that he’ll be the keynote speaker at this year’s blockbuster New Orleans 2021 Investment Conference.
Once again, consider who else will be joining Dr. Paul on our stage:
|
James Grant...Jim Rickards...Danielle DiMartino Booth...George Gammon...Grant Williams...Peter Schiff…Jim Iuorio...Doug Casey...Rick Rule...Peter Boockvar…Dave Collum...Dominic Frisby...Tavi Costa...
…Lawrence Lepard... Brent Johnson...Peter Boockvar...Mark Skousen...The Real Estate Guys...Adrian Day...Gwen Preston...Bill Murphy...Chris Powell...Robert Prechter...Mary Anne and Pamela Aden...Omar Ayales...Thom Calandra...Brent Cook...Joe Mazumdar...Gerardo Del Real...Steve Hochberg...Dana Samuelson... …And, of course, yours truly!
Add in the fact that New Orleans 2021 will be the first event of its kind to return to an in person format, and people will be talking about this conference for many years to come.
It’s exciting but, again, I have to warn you that there will be a severe crunch on available rooms in our host hotel, thanks to both the red-hot demand and a limited supply.

So you need to act immediately if you hope to join us at this exciting event.
