Pardon the pun in the headline above, but it seemed appropriate as this momentous year draws to a close.
According to Brittanica, “The lyrics of ‘Auld Lang Syne’ are in the Scots language. The title, translated literally into standard English, is Old Long Since."
So, considering the yellow metal’s role as the one true money and the very foundation of prices for all of recorded human history and beyond, the phrase “gold long since” rings perfectly true.
I was reminded of this when I reposted a chart on X showing how the mean age of parents at birth started rising steeply around 1971. As I responded in that thread:
Indeed, WTFHappenedIn1971.com presents a compelling array of charts proving how pivotal 1971 was, and why there it was definitely not a coincidence that these economic an societal changes began with the removal of gold as a restraint on deficit spending and currency creation.
Another great site, PricedInGold.com, is equally powerful, in this case by showing how gold is at the center of the financial universe. Virtually every asset or index, when priced in gold, trades at the same “price” as it did decades ago.
In short, currencies depreciate not against each other, but against gold. And as it has for millennia, gold protects people against this inevitable depreciation.

After this first, important year in gold’s new bull market, I wanted to leave you with this timeless lesson on gold’s role as money.
