José Azel fled Cuba when he was 13 years old, a member of the Pedro Pan exodus, and he never went back. He now reflects on his decades in academic and public debates for a free Cuba, and he laments the gross ignorance that has enabled the communist regime to remain in power for more than half a century and ruin the lives of millions of people.
His latest book, Reflections on Freedom, is a collection of his hundreds of columns and his legacy. The senior scholar with the Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies (ICCAS) hopes it will stand as a lasting message to his kin, the Cuban Americans, and to the people of the United States, as they struggle to retain whatever free market exists in the land of the free.
On a personal note, ICCAS has had a decisive impact on my life, and its likely dissolution will be a loss to the University of Miami. While they are still in operation, I strongly recommend that people utilize their courses and attend their events. There simply is no better place to get personal instruction on Cuba’s past, present, and future.
